Canada is attracting Doctors from across the world

Canada is attracting Doctors
from across the world

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), between 2015 and 2019,

  • The growth rate in the number of physicians in Canada was twice that of the general population (1)

  • Canada has been gaining more physicians from international migration than it’s been losing (1)

Why are so many Doctors moving to Canada?

The Canadian Health Care System (2) offers the prospects of great pay, few bureaucratic headaches, and the opportunity to focus on patient care rather than finances and documentation. Some benefits of practicing medicine in Canada:

  • According to the Global News (3) – Family physicians make around 271,000 CAD, medical specialists make around 338,000 CAD and surgical specialists earn 446,000 CAD.
  • Doctors in Canada are insured against medical malpractice claims through the government-subsidized Canadian Medical Protective Association (6). Ontario, for example, reimburses doctors for up to 83 percent of the fees they pay. (7)
  • You will not have to follow up with the insurance company or patients for your payments. Canadians are provided a basic level of coverage under Canadian Medicare, and 2/3 of Canadians purchase private insurance to cover other services.
  • No one will ever say to you “that patient can’t afford that procedure, so you can’t do it”. If you say a patient needs a procedure, they get that procedure.

The Canadian healthcare system recognizes the need for someone to be the captain of outpatient care. This allows you to offer holistic care to patients. Also, the culture does not encourage defensive medicine practices.

Rated by the US News as the top country for Quality of Life (4). In many internationally recognized surveys, Canada scores high for civil liberties, government transparency, education, health, safety, and quality of life. Canada is known as one of the world’s most multicultural nations. Has wide open spaces, sophisticated cities, and an active lifestyle with a culture that supports a quality work-life balance.

Canada is a great place to practice medicine while enjoying an ideal lifestyle of wellness for you and your family.

Planning your move to Canada

The process involves multiple stages and steps that need to be cleared before you can start your practice in Canada. In nutshell the process typically looks like this:

  1. Confirm that your medical degree is recognised in Canada (5)
  2. Sign up on Physicianapply.ca and submit your medical credentials for verification
  3. Practice and pass the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I and Part II
  4. Apply for Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) and the Licensures specific to the province or territory from the Canadian Boards – Royal College Exams
  5. Get medical liability protection from Canadian Medical Protective Association (6)
  6. Unless you have a Canadian Passport, you will need a work visa or need to secure a Permanent Residency, which involves going through the Canadian immigration process
  7. Find a job and start your medical practice in Canada.

The process of licensures, immigration, and finding a job all together can take up to a few years till you start your practice in Canada. There are numerous procedural delays, and doctors are often required to show that they have a job before they can meet the requirements and start the process. Having a job will not only expedite your immigration process but once you arrive in Canada you will save about 12 to 18 months which is the average timeframe between applying for a job and starting work.

If you are licensed to practice medicine in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, United States, New Zealand, or Singapore you can significantly speed up your relocation process by finding a job with supervision.

With a job with clinical supervision you can obtain a provisional license allowing you to practice medicine in your specialty with clinical supervision for 12-18 months. The supervisor should hold a full license in your specialty and will review a handful of your clinical cases every month. They will serve as a mentor to educate you on local resources and practices. In general, supervision is more helpful than onerous. Following the period of supervision, you can easily obtain a full license to practice in Canada.
